CommunicationThe tragic events of September 11, 2001 in New York and July 7, 2005 in London highlighted the critical importance of effective first responder communications systems. The lack of public safety interoperability is a long-standing, complex and costly problem with many obstacles to overcome. Challenged by incompatible and aging communications equipment, a fragmented radio spectrum, budget cycles and funding, as well as by a lack of equipment standards and planning and coordination, the process of achieving communications interoperability will not be completed overnight. Given that developments in voice, data and IP communications are providing a wider range of options for improved communications and interoperability, government, agency and first responder officials must understand that effective communications is not just about choosing the right equipment. Rather it is about a broader vision of sharing critical information seamlessly, and communicating as one unified workforce to perform mission critical duties. Topics Under Discussion
